Record Independence Day Travel in the U.S.

This year's Fourth of July week has set new records for travel in the United States. With summer vacations in full swing and more people able to work remotely, an additional 5.7 million travelers compared to 2019 are expected. The American Automobile Association (AAA) projects 60.6 million people will travel by car, a significant increase from last year. Lower gas prices, averaging $3.49 per gallon nationally, have contributed to this surge. 


Travelers are advised to plan their trips strategically to avoid peak congestion times. INRIX, a transportation analytics company, highlights the worst times for road travel around the holiday. For example, leaving on July 3rd between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. could extend travel times by up to 67%.



New Visa Updates for 2024

Several important visa updates have been announced, affecting travelers worldwide:


1. Schengen Area Expansion: Romania and Bulgaria are joining the Schengen Area by March 2024, facilitating easier travel across these countries without internal border checks. They will also begin issuing short-term Schengen visas.

2. Finland's Financial Requirements: From January 2024, travelers to Finland must prove they have €50 per day for short stays, up from the previous €30.

3. Digital Visas in France: France is digitizing its visa process, starting with issuing 70,000 digital visas for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. These will be integrated into the applicants' accreditation cards.

4. South Korea’s Digital Nomad Visa: Introduced in January 2024, this visa allows remote workers to stay in South Korea for up to two years, provided they earn over 84.96 million won annually.

5. H-1B Visa Renewals in the U.S.: A new pilot program starting January 29, 2024, allows H-1B visa holders to renew their visas within the U.S. This program initially covers 20,000 applicants from India and Canada.

6. Work on Tourist Visas in the UK: Effective January 31, 2024, the UK allows tourists to engage in various work-related activities, such as attending meetings and conferences, but excludes remote work.

The travel industry is offering various promotions to attract summer travelers:


- Marriott Bonvoy's Flash Sale: Save 20% on summer stays at Marriott properties.

- Cruise Deals: MSC Cruises and Princess Cruises have launched new itineraries and partnerships, offering discounts and exclusive experiences. For example, Princess Cruises is collaborating with the Academy of Country Music to enhance onboard entertainment. 

Additionally, Emirates is offering free 5-star hotel stays for travelers to Dubai, adding value to long-haul flights and enhancing the travel experience. 



Travel Alerts and Recommendations

Travelers should be aware of potential delays and plan accordingly. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expects over 28 million passengers during the Fourth of July week, a 5.4% increase from last year. It's recommended to arrive at airports two hours early and use carry-on luggage to save time.
